I am a Charlie Chaplin fan and always loved The Gold Rush. I was intrigued to discover that the scene in the log cabin, when he and Big Jim are snowed in and suffering from cabin fever, had a connection with my locality. The boot that they end up eating, as if it was a roast chicken was made by a Pontefract liquorice company. Liquorice has been grown in this area since medieval times.

They actually took three days and 60 retakes to make that scene. And they went through a lot of liquorice boots, until Chaplin, who directed the movie, was happy.

The laxative effects of the liquorice became very clear and Chaplin was rushed to hospital with fluid loss and electrolyte disturbance and blood sugar problems. Liquorice is not just laxative, but has mineralocorticoid effects and can cause hypertension and sodium retention.

The sacrifices that actors make for their art!Keith Souterhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15206349930107528691noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1409887812566625284.post-5156474960298581542013-10-16T01:34:05.542-05:002013-10-16T01:34:05.542-05:00I can just see Steve McQueen doing stuff to bring ...I can just see Steve McQueen doing stuff to bring attention to his character.
