Renaissance laces would have been knotted or embroidered.

(I tat). Yes, I remember when we wore hats, gloves, fancy shoes and clothes to church. Then came the late 60s... I tend to be a bit bummy myself, but I do dress up for banquets, weddings, and funerals. I ought to rethink the church bit, and dress up again. Yes, I would have loved to chat clothes with your dad.Meghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10734148270217773194noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1409887812566625284.post-77344220654868491612015-09-25T15:32:58.783-05:002015-09-25T15:32:58.783-05:00Meg,
(Sorry, I thought I didn't have much to ...Meg,

(Sorry, I thought I didn't have much to say about this subject, and then my memory kicked in).

Can't say much about lace and fashion, except to say it certainly was a time to play dress up. Certainly what you point out is a time of extreme elegance.

Let me talk about my own personal experience. My father was an oil field worker and was born in 1912. As a child I knew he thought clothes made the man---or at least were important for the outer man and woman. He made sure we all had Sunday suits and my sisters, Sunday dresses with shined shoes, only to be worn to church.

On SUNDAYS father ALWAYS wore a suit to church. He was there twenty minutes early and as usher and greeter was absolutely enthusiastic to greet the parishioners. (He did this all his life).

At one point in his elder years he purchased mother a very expensive mink fur coat. For a year he went around saying, "I was finally able to buy my wife a mink!" (I still have that mink coat and it is exquisite).

Clothes meant a lot to my tough old man. And get this, Mister Muscles, my tough old man; the oil roustabout's favorite color was PINK!

I think you and my father would have had a lot to talk about. GONE WITH THE WIND was his favorite book and I am sure it was the clothes of the era that was part of his ardor for that book and its characters.

Thanks for writing this piece that reminded me indirectly of my father and his ancient ideas about clothes.

(He would probably say today, that most people dress like bums. I wonder, there may be some truth that we have all gone the other way.)
Charlie Steelhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16992330591519249699noreply@blogger.com
