I think ...Now that's what I was talking about. I think kids today have lost something really great, the opportunity to use their imaginations. LIke Charlie was talking about, stretched out on the floor in front of the radio, the world ceased to exist. We didn't need any picture on a screen, the images is our minds were magnificently clear, and strangely enough, everybody had all their clothes on. Now days, everyone, kids and adults alike, plops down in front of the t.v. and lets it do all the work. Great research and delivery Tom, as usual. Thanks for the memories. It's uncanny how merely listening can pull you so completely into a story.

I've watched several shows on Foley and how they made those sound effects on the radio shows. It's not always what would be obvious. They used some pretty clever methods to get just the right sound. He shared some great stories about Orson Welles and others and talked of the numerous tricks they used for sound effects. That was perhaps the first of many times I decided I was born several decades too late. What a wonderful era that was!Vonn McKeehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02271500340284234767noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1409887812566625284.post-75082271186739602192014-06-17T10:41:40.647-05:002014-06-17T10:41:40.647-05:00Tom -- Wonderful piece! Now you have peaked my interest in the old westerns and of course I'll move on to mysteries.

We had one of the first TVs in our area so I really never listened to the radio shows. But as an actor, these stars and their stories are fascinating. A lot of work in this piece and it shows!

So much wonderful information and from a time I was a very young lad indeed.

Television didn't really exist and besides radio, there were only the movies to turn to for such high drama. How eager the family was, after supper, to sit and listen to these thrilling radio programs!

Those of that era (as I did) lay on the floor in front of the huge wooden radio, next to the speaker, listening to the sound effects and voices you describe.

Despite the hum of vacuum tubes and the crackling of static, no one went an evening without listening to their favorite programs.

Excellent piece, Mr. Tom Rizzo! I might even say, THRILLING, for those of us who remember those days.

Charlie
Charlie Steelhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16992330591519249699noreply@blogger.com
