I knew the suicide rate in Alaska was the highest in all the USA, but I didn't know that much of it was contributed to culture. I thought it was because winter is long, cold and dark.
I'm glad you're there to help in what ways you can.Sarah J. Seems to be a lot of vandalism, and such as well as the violent stuff.
Marc Cameronhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14652887133889558701noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1409887812566625284.post-19394999776318659162013-06-21T17:45:02.948-05:002013-06-21T17:45:02.948-05:00Oh the memories of working juvenile detention/lock...Oh the memories of working juvenile detention/lock-up. What an amazing time, and I agree, the stories. How fortunate you are there for some of these children. It is sometimes hard to go back to that time in my life, but fond memories also of the young people who came through the doors. I'm so glad you wrote about it in your post today. I'll probably never get to Alaska, and certainly would never be able to see it through the eyes of someone who as spent as much time there as you, but through your posts and pictures, we get to see it in a way that otherwise we never could have. I'm glad that there are people in the world like you who are able and caring enough to "go the extra mile" and give these kids an experience they never would have known otherwise. You never know what a difference you make in someone's life. It's wonderful that those kids have someone like you to give them a little respite and learn some along the way. Question: have you noticed that remote areas have violent crime but not much petty crime? It seemed that way when I was growing up.
