It remains that conflict has been used to do just that throughout recorded history.

Your article is very well done, a good read.Geraldhttp://www.greatmilitarybattles.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1409887812566625284.post-48443485310372353592015-03-02T07:59:30.822-06:002015-03-02T07:59:30.822-06:00The only good news is that they failed to extermin...The only good news is that they failed to exterminate them. It should be a required part of learning American history that everyone travel to the Mall in D.C. to see the National Museum of the American Indian....in order to enter you have to turn your back on the Capitol Building. There we all can see the cultures still thriving and contributing. Thanks for the comment, for caring, and for the insights you gave all your students, Kaye.swkhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08196847116771842868noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1409887812566625284.post-26901571201520213552015-03-01T17:34:37.649-06:002015-03-01T17:34:37.649-06:00What is not included in schools' history books...What is not included in schools' history books is one of my soap boxes. As a former history teacher, I found it unconscionable that my school's chosen history curriculum told white-washed versions, or worse, made no mention of many episodes in history that shouldn't be forgotten (swept under the political correctness rug).

Without going into detail, suffice it to say that I diverged from the text books with supplemental materials. I did what I could to tell "the rest of the story".

The systematic extermination of the Native American population in our country hurts me personally, and collectively, as an American. I've always held to the adage that "Custer had it coming".

As an aside, I taught civics from a book that was so out dated it advised the best way to contact your congressmen/representatives with your concerns as a citizen was via telegram.

0_o

On another note, the Sand Creek Massacre is about 100 miles north of where I live. I was there many years before the national monument and the dedication ceremonies were held. I hope to make it there this summer for another visit.

Kaye Spencerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13530735658588595790noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1409887812566625284.post-73978517321246332022015-03-01T12:30:31.669-06:002015-03-01T12:30:31.669-06:00It's hard to figure out what more Black Kettle...It's hard to figure out what more Black Kettle could have done to protect himself and his people from the greed of the overwhelming force of white settlers and Army. And now we have stupid politicians who want only positive things about America to be taught in history classes. We cannot hold ourselves up to the world as paragons of righteousness when we won't even admit our mistakes and apologize for them.JDMhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14553746548877350294noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1409887812566625284.post-56256689380400400572015-03-01T09:23:31.184-06:002015-03-01T09:23:31.184-06:00Thanks so much, Charlie. Just recently, the truth has begun to be discussed about how Black Kettle and his band died. (Chivington didn't kill Black Kettle but four years later, Custer did.) The truth was always there but seldom reached a large majority of Americans. Because the history of systematic elimination of tribes is NOT taught in a comprehensive manner in our schools, it seems few will know or seemingly care just how tragic the treatment of American Indians was.

Because of an unwillingness to relate this history, American Indian tribes to this day continue to suffer breaking of treaties and ill treatment
Charlie Steelhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16992330591519249699noreply@blogger.com
