Actually, it always amazes me how skillful this group was at the marketing and sales of these kinds of products. They believed absolutely in what they were peddling. A quote by John Wesley comes to mind (although I'm sure he didn't have snake oil in mind): “I set myself on fire and people come to watch me burn.” Now, that's real passion.thomasrizzohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00762315714546553945noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1409887812566625284.post-77723390494929132142015-08-18T11:40:25.197-05:002015-08-18T11:40:25.197-05:00Great post, Tom. And on behalf of the medical profession, I thank you for the suggestion that we only give patients things that work!

Actually, the whole area of quackery and snake oil medicine fascinates me. They capitalised on salesmanship an the placebo effect, because a lot of people would have sworn by those remedies, whig would have worked for them. Indeed, practitioners of many offshoots of medicine, such as John Wesley and his ethereal fire, would come to believe absolutely in their practice, because they got results.

A beautifully crafted article, as always.

Keith
Keith Souterhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15206349930107528691noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1409887812566625284.post-32543058273426860332015-08-18T08:05:30.772-05:002015-08-18T08:05:30.772-05:00Crash and burn is an apt description. That's why I left a link to an article in Collectors Weekly, which provides a good overview of their rise and fall. They became quite eccentric, fought with each other. One died at 40. Another banished because she married a much younger man. The mansion in which they lived ultimately went up in smoke along with the formulas to their products. Probably worth a blog by itself. thomasrizzohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00762315714546553945noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1409887812566625284.post-39792276571510349492015-08-18T05:33:19.339-05:002015-08-18T05:33:19.339-05:00But what happened to the sisters, Tom?
