Mitchum called it his greatest performance, and I agree. The film itself was beautifully-filmed, and way ahead of its time... one of my all-time favorites.<br /><br />Robert Ryan was another great villain- particularly in THE NAKED SPUR, and (more sympathetically) THE WILD BUNCH. It's hard to beat Gene Hackman as the vicious sheriff in UNFORGIVEN, too.Troy D. I can't think of any other villains o...WOW Meg! I can't think of any other villains other then these you've mentioned. My favorites out of these are Lee Marvin (Liberty Valance) and Bruce Dern--my gosh, I wonder if he ever got the chance to play a good guy in his career? Every time you see a movie with him in it you just know before it starts he's going to be the evil baddie. LOL Jack Palance's role in Shane was remarkable because he did so much with so little--he only had 12 lines of dialogue, I believe it was, in that movie.
